In what is totally not a concession that their subpoena authority doesn’t allow them to demand that counties turn over ballots and election equipment, Republican senators are now pushing a bill to change state law to force counties to turn over ballots and election equipment if lawmakers subpoena it.
And don’t dare think that the legislation undercuts the legal arguments of the Senate against Maricopa County, which has argued in court that the Senate’s subpoena authority doesn’t allow them to demand ballots and election equipment. Nope, it’s just “an insurance policy” in case the courts (as they are wont to do) rule that legislators are acting illegally.
Just because GOP senators want to change the law to make sure they aren’t at all accountable for possibly breaking the law — and dramatically expanding their power in the process — doesn’t mean that they are going to extreme lengths to bolster a delusional and repeatedly debunked conspiracy theory that is poisoning America.
